Calls you might be missing

Put in a few rough numbers and see what missed and after-hours calls may be worth in jobs that go to someone else. Every line of the math is on the page.

Your numbers

Start from the defaults and move each one to match your business. Rough is fine.

Every inbound call, answered or not.

On a job, on another call, evenings, weekends.

Instead of leaving a message or waiting for a call back.

Out of 10 calls you pick up, how many become paid jobs.

What a typical paid job brings in.

Your numbers stay in this page and its address. Nothing is sent unless you ask for a copy below.

Revenue at stake, likely

$4,680a month

About $56,160 a year in jobs that went to someone else.

An estimate from your numbers, not a promise. It is revenue, not profit.

Low
$2,293
Likely
$4,680
High
$7,909

Low uses 17.5% missed and 42% calling a competitor. High uses 32.5% and 78%. Everything else stays at your numbers.

The math, line by line

No black box. Each line uses the one above it.

From missed calls

  1. Calls a week40 calls40
  2. Missed or after hours40 × 25%10 calls
  3. Call a competitor instead10 × 60%6 callers
  4. Would have become jobs6 × 40% close rate2.4 jobs a week
  5. Jobs a month2.4 × 4.33 weeks10.4 jobs
  6. From the phone, a month10.4 × $450$4,680

A month is 52 weeks divided by 12, so 4.33 weeks. A year is 12 months.

Three fixes

What would win the most of it back

Ranked by the part of your estimate each one works on. The win-back shares are rough assumptions, used only to put them in order.

  1. After-hours quote form with instant text-backAbout $1,170 a month

When a call goes unanswered, the caller gets a text right away with a link to a short quote form. They hear from you before they dial the next shop.

If it wins back 1 in 4 of the callers you lose.
    DIY
Free: change your voicemail greeting to point callers to a quote form on your site.

Foundation Site, $500: includes the contact or quote form on a mobile-first page.
    Software
The instant text needs a texting tool with a monthly fee paid to that provider. Connecting it is an add-on priced in your written scope.
  2. Call routing rulesAbout $468 a month

Ring a second phone after a few rings, send overflow to whoever is in the office, and set after-hours rules so urgent calls reach someone.

If it wins back 1 in 10 of the callers you lose.
    DIY
Often free: ring groups, forwarding, and schedules are in most carrier and business phone apps.
    Software
A business phone system, usually a monthly fee per user. Cornerstone does not sell phone systems.
  3. Click-to-call on every screenAdd website numbers to size it

A call button that stays in reach on a phone, on every page, plus a short quote form for people who would rather type.

    DIY
Free if your site builder lets you add a tap-to-call link to the header.

Foundation Site, $500: click-to-call and a contact form on every screen, built mobile-first.

Where the defaults come from

Ordinary numbers, not flattering ones

The starting values are a middle case for an owner-run shop. Replace every one with yours; the estimate is only as good as the numbers you put in.

  • Calls a week

A busy shop with one to three trucks. A solo operator may see half that; a shop with a dispatcher, far more.

    40
  • Missed or after hours

Owners on a roof, under a sink, or on another call cannot pick up, and evenings and weekends add more. If you track it, use your number.

    25%
  • Call a competitor instead

Someone with a leak or no heat rarely waits for a call back. Planned work waits longer, so lower this if most of your calls are not urgent.

    60%
  • Close rate

A middle value for trades that quote on the phone or on site. Lower if you compete mostly on price; higher if most calls are repeat customers.

    40%
  • Average job

A common service ticket for repair work. Replacement and install work runs far higher, so set this to what your typical paid job brings in.

    $450
  • Website win-back

Of visitors who leave without calling, the share a clear call button and quote form would have turned into a call. Our assumption; the range uses 1% to 3%.
